Empowering Veterans Through Resilience: A Life Story.
In the heart of Dallas, Texas, during an era marked by segregation and strife, my journey began. I walked the halls of Lincoln High School, fueled by ambition and determination. Graduating with honors was my first taste of accomplishment, but destiny had something more profound in store for me.
It was the turbulent times of the Vietnam War, and the patriotic fire within me blazed brighter than ever. Witnessing friends and family answering the call to serve their country ignited a deep sense of duty. I felt an urgent need to join their ranks, to be a part of something larger than life. Our nation was losing countless brave souls, and I couldn’t stand on the sidelines any longer.
So, I embarked on a journey that led me to the Army, an institution that held the promise of an enduring career. Rising through the ranks, I was on the brink of Officer Candidate School, poised for a lifelong military career. But fate had a different plan. An assault during my service shattered my trust and redirected my life’s trajectory. It was 1969, and support for survivors of trauma was scarce. My resilience emerged as I chose to bring a new life into the world, my daughter Tiko, despite the challenges.
Returning home, I faced the unfamiliar role of a mother. Determined to provide for Tiko, I embarked on a journey of public service, working for the city of Dallas, earning a degree in criminal justice, and becoming a fire inspector.
My corporate journey began with Southland Corporation, where I excelled in managing districts and teams across various states. It was a testament to the skills honed during my military service.
Yet, an unspoken struggle persisted. Therapy became my lifeline, helping me navigate the labyrinth of my emotions. In 2014, I faced homelessness, a turning point that illuminated the shortcomings in veterans’ support systems.
Seeking help, I entered the VA hospital and its domiciliary program, a glimmer of hope in the darkness. Housing vouchers, though promising, often led to subpar living conditions.
My path took a turn towards nonprofit work with the Urban League, where I facilitated microloans for aspiring entrepreneurs.
Returning to Houston in 2019, I sought reconciliation with my daughter, a journey marked by challenges and hope. Therapy guided me through these turbulent waters.
Now, in 2023, I’m poised to share my story with fellow veterans. I’ve secured a 100% disability rating and aim to empower others to navigate VA claims without costly legal assistance. My life story is a testament to resilience, strength, and the indomitable human spirit. Together, as veterans, we can conquer any challenge that life presents.
